Hello and welcome to the Burton Joyce Primary School website. I’m Margaret Gretton, Head Teacher at Burton Joyce and am delighted that you are visiting our site.
Burton Joyce is a wonderful school to be at, for staff and pupils alike; we have a great site, with lots of mature trees and squirrels running around! We have a large field and two playgrounds; one for KS1 and one for KS2. Our children come mostly from Burton Joyce village, although some come from Lowdham and other nearby villages. The school is very much part of its community and is involved in many village events.
We have an active school council, with representatives from each class. They meet on a regular basis with Mrs Hunter and discuss important issues about things going on in school. The school council reps take issues raised by their peers to the meetings and these are discussed and often resolved as a result. Children are voted onto the school council by their peers and are in position for a school year.
All the staff in school are passionate about giving BJ pupils the best opportunities we can give. We work hard to make sure that the curriculum is enriched and exciting and that there are many opportunities for children to go on visits and have visitors into school. In years 4, 5 and 6 children are given the opportunity to go on residential visits with school, as listed below:
We also offer children the chance to play a musical instrument eg. Guitar, flute or recorder and learn French. We have recently had our Ofsted inspection (April 2009); the inspectors were very impressed by our school and the standards of teaching and learning; we were delighted with the report.
We have a very active PTA in school, who raise a lot of money to fund initiatives. The PTA run summer and Christmas fairs, as well as other social events. New parents to the school are encouraged to join the PTA and play an active role in supporting their school.
As well as the normal school day, which lasts from 8.50 to 3.30, we offer extended school provision, which means that parents can pay for their children to attend breakfast, after school, afternoon nursery or holiday club. You will find more information about these services on our website.
Many exciting things are happening in school at the moment! We have had murals painted by a local artist, Chris Green. The children have been busy planning the installation of our new outdoor play equipment. They have come up with fantastic plans, which include monkey bars, bridges and all sorts of wonderful things! The children have met with the companies who supply and install equipment and are in the process of deciding on their preferred option.
In September we will be teaching French throughout the school as part of our curriculum; we will also be introducing a creative curriculum, which will give children greater opportunity for learning through exploration and in a creative way. We are also planning to develop our ICT provision this year and Governors have ring fenced a significant sum of money from the budget to do this.
I hope that you enjoy visiting our site.
